Sylvia "Chivi" Downs, a beloved matriarch and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully at her home in Bourbonnais, Illinois, on December 28, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on March 2, 1951, in East Chicago, Indiana, Sylvia lived her life with grace and compassion, leaving a profound impact on all those lucky enough to know her.
Sylvia was united in marriage to her devoted husband, Martin Downs, for 52 wonderful years. Together, they nurtured a loving family that includes their sons, Mathew and Samuel Downs, who hold dear the values instilled in them by their mother. As a grandmother, Sylvia found immense joy in her role, doting on her grandson, Logan, and granddaughter, Mya, who brought warmth and laughter into her life.
She was also a cherished sister to Ernest, Katalina, and Mary, who will deeply miss her presence and the fond memories they shared together. Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, Ernesto Magana and Catalina Magana, and an infant son, Juan, whose memory remained an enduring part of her life’s journey.
Services celebrating Sylvia's life will be held at Acevez Funeral Home Hammond located at 4404 Cameron Ave, Hammond, IN 46327. The visitation will take place on January 8, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 7:15 PM, followed by a viewing on January 9, 2026, from 9:00 AM until 9:45 AM. A Mass in her honor will follow at St. Casimir Church, situated at 4340 Johnson Avenue, Hammond, IN 46327, starting at 10:00 AM and concluding at 11:00 AM.
Sylvia "Chivi" Downs will be remembered not only for her love of family but also for her generous spirit and unwavering support of those around her. Her legacy of kindness, compassion, and strength will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
