Sophie Kania, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, at St. Catherine's Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana. She was born on May 11, 1937, in Wrocanka, Poland. Sophie was a treasure to all who knew her, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched throughout her remarkable life.
Sophie’s journey to America began when she married her husband, John Kania, and left her homeland in her early twenties. This transition marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with hard work and love, as she devoted herself to her family and community. She dedicated many years to serving as a custodial worker at Bishop Noll Institute and later as part of the kitchen staff for the East Chicago Public School System, where her passion for cooking and nourishing others thrived.
Sophie was renowned for her culinary skills, and her Polish cuisine brought joy to countless gatherings. Her pierogi and galubki (stuffed cabbage) were favorites among family and friends, who would eagerly look forward to her special dishes. Sophie also delighted everyone with her delicious raisin bread (Polish babka), paczki, and apple slices. Each meal was not just a dish but an expression of her love, a way for her to serve and nurture those around her.
A vibrant soul, Sophie was much more than an excellent cook; she was known for her infectious energy and love for dancing. Her laughter and joy filled any room, and she cherished the moments spent with her friends, often weaving together stories that connected generations. Even in her later years, her zest for life remained, reminding all of the importance of warmth, community, and connection.
Sophie leaves behind her loving daughter, Diane Kania, and her dear sister, Danuta Markuszka. She is also survived by her cherished cousins, Zofia Burwinkel and Eva Schuth, who hold dear the memories of their time together. Although she has departed from this world, she will be profoundly missed by those who remain.
Sophie was preceded in death by her mother, Stefania Ryzner, her father, Jan Ryzner, and her brother, Stanislaw Ryzner. The legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of love, warmth, and delicious meals—will continue to resonate within her family and friends, who will always remember her with fondness.
Visitation will take place on May 30, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Acevez Funeral Home in Hammond, Indiana. A viewing will be held the following day, May 31, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM DIRECTLY at St. Stanislaus Church in East Chicago, followed by a Mass at 10:00 AM. Sophie will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, Illinois, after a burial service at 11:30 AM.
As we celebrate the life of Sophie Kania, let us remember her undeniable spirit and the love she shared with all of us. She will forever remain in our hearts, a guiding light shining through the memories of her laughter, her dances, and her lovingly prepared meals.
