Nina Kowalewski

EAST CHICAGO, IN – Nina Kowalewski, 101, passed away at home on January 27, 2024. She was born in Soviet Russia on December 24, 1922. In 1941, she was forcibly taken from her home in Russia by invading Nazi soldiers. She spent the remainder of World War II working in Germany as a forced laborer. After the war, she married Stefan Kowalewski, and gave birth to a son, Edward.
The three of them were resettled in the United States in 1952 as displaced persons, and made a home in the Indiana Harbor section of East Chicago. In 1959, she became a citizen of the United States. Nina was a resident of Indiana Harbor for over 70 years, and worked at St. Catherine Hospital for 27 years. She was a longtime member of St. John Cantius Church in Indiana Harbor and a member of the Polish National Alliance. She is survived by her grandson, Adrian Kowalewski. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stefan Kowalewski, and her son, Edward Kowalewski, with whom she is on the way to be reunited.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Acevez Funeral Home, 4404 Cameron Avenue, Hammond, Indiana, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Casimir Church, 4340 Johnson Avenue in Hammond, with Rev. Eduardo Malagon officiating.
Following Mass, she will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 801 Michigan City Road, Calumet City, Illinois.
