Maria J. Mizerski

Maria J. MIzerski (Obrębska), age 82, of Hammond (formerly Calumet City, IL) passed away Saturday, December 6, 2025. Born in Eastern Poland to a large family, she immigrated to America in 1972 to join her sister, Christine, in the Chicagoland area. There she met the love of her life, Marian, and decided to stay in the United States to build a life with him. She welcomed two children into their family and spent their childhoods and early adulthoods raising them as a homemaker. Once her youngest graduated high school, Maria became employed at Hammond’s Carmelite Home for Boys as a housekeeper in 1995. She worked there until its closure in 2008.

Preceded in death by husband, Marian Mizerski; parents, Weronika Obrębska and Józef Obrębski; brothers, Felix Obrębski and Eugeniusz Obrębski; and sister, Lucyna Grzybowska. She is survived by her son, Daniel Mizerski; daughter, Sandra (Christopher) Wojtaszek; granddaughters, Abigail and Hailey Wojtaszek; sister, Christine Nisiewicz; niece and nephew, Cathy Lewandowski and George (Erin) Nisiewicz; brothers, Jan Obrębski and Jerzy Obrębski; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family in Poland.

During her life, Maria greatly enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading Polish novels, talking with friends and spending time with her family and their dogs. Her greatest joy of all was spending time with her two granddaughters. She will be remembered fondly as a vibrant woman, dear friend, and devoted mother and grandmother. She was quick to make friends wherever she went and loved to have a good laugh and bring a smile to someone’s face.

The family extends its most sincere gratitude to the nursing staff of Hospice of the Calumet Area for being present as a source of loving support.

Visitation will be on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Acevez Funeral Home in Hammond.

A final viewing will be Friday, December 12, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.

A Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Casimir Church, with Rev. Eduardo Malagon officiating. 

Cremation to follow, with inurnment at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery.
