Luz “Lucy” Barbosa, age 79, transitioned to her eternal dwelling peacefully at home on June 1, 2025. She graced the world with her presence for eight decades, leaving behind a legacy of love and an indelible impact on the lives of all who knew her.
Born on June 22, 1945, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Lucy was a beacon of light, as her name signifies. She is remembered for her unwavering care and dedication to family, her boundless qualities such as compassion, love, and a warm smile.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ismael Barbosa; parents, Gregorio and Rogelia Acevedo; and sister, Mercedes Acevedo. They were all blessed with her care for them.
Lucy will be remembered as a loving mother and an adoring and doting grandmother. She is survived by children: Ricky Novales, Esther (Rick) Moran, Yolanda Novales, and Ismael Barbosa Jr.; grandchildren: Ricky (Aimee) Moran, Jasmine Lucy (Kiko), and Jacob Ismael Barbosa; and her great-grandchildren: Gavin W. Moran, Makenna K. Moran, and Julius Ismael. She was also a very caring sister and aunt, survived by sister, Nilda (Jorge) Marrero; brother, Gregorio (Ramona) Acevedo, Jr., and loving nephews and nieces. Her family will forever be blessed by her unconditional love and all her sacrifices made out of that love.
Lucy was known for her hospitality and Puerto Rican cuisine. She enjoyed embroidery and collecting seashells and birds. She found great strength in her faith in God and enjoyed reading her devotions. Her kind heart and her care for others will continue to serve as a reminder of her remarkable character.
A celebration of Lucy's life will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at Iglesia Emanuel (Harbor), 3802 Elm Street, East Chicago, IN. Visitation will be at 10 am and the service at 11 am. The final resting place will be at Ridgelawn Cemetery.
Lucy’s legacy continues to inspire others through the love she so selflessly gave in life. Her loved ones will forever hold her close in their hearts, honoring her legacy of kindness, compassion, and love for God and others.
