Karen Elaine Moen, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on December 3, 2025, in Gary, Indiana. Born on August 17, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois, Karen lived a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering kindness, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Karen was a remarkable individual known for her phenomenal cooking, a talent she graciously inherited from her mother, Anita Blackwell. Her culinary delights brought family and friends together, particularly during the joyous holiday gatherings she so lovingly organized. These gatherings were a testament to her dedication to family, where she cherished every moment spent celebrating with those she held dear.
To describe Karen as simply vibrant would be an understatement. She truly was the life of the party, illuminating every room with her infectious laughter and uplifting spirit. Those fortunate enough to have known her recognized her inherent kindness and deep compassion. Karen was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, embodying a pure heart of gold. However, her feisty side was well-known; she had a spirit that could both entertain and fiercely protect those she loved.
Beyond her remarkable personality, Karen enjoyed spending her summers at the campground, immersing herself in the beauty of nature. Festival concerts with her family brought her immense joy, allowing her to create enduring memories with those she cherished most.
Karen took immense pride in her role as a grandmother, reveling in the joys that her grandchildren brought into her life. She leaves behind her loving husband, Joseph Scziglak; her children, William (Caitlin) Moen, Woodrow Wilson, and Kasey (Harvey) Cox; and her cherished grandchildren, Lucas Synder, Austin, Olivia, Benjamin, Hunter, and Samuel Moen. She is also survived by her sisters, Lisa Moen, Laura Williams, and Margie (Josh) Blackwell; her aunt, Michelle Chwalisz; her sister-in-law, Jackie (Steve) Tiemans; and her mother-in-law, Ann Scziglak.
Karen is reunited in spirit with her mother, Anita (Bill) Blackwell, and her father, Jack Moen, who preceded her in death. The legacy of her kindness, warmth, and vibrant spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of her family and friends. As we remember Karen Elaine Moen, we celebrate a life lived fully, with love, laughter, and a profound impact on all those fortunate enough to have known her.
