With hearts full of love and memories, we mournfully announce the passing of Juanita Martha DeJesus, affectionately known as Marty, who left this world on July 29, 2026, in East Chicago, Indiana. Surrounded by her beloved family and cherished friends, Juanita found peace as she moved from this life to the next, leaving behind a legacy of unshakable love, boundless warmth, and unwavering dedication to all who knew her.

Juanita was born on November 11, 1944, in East Chicago, Indiana, the daughter of Frank Badajoza Sr. and Maria Chavez. From her earliest days, Juanita shined with a compassionate spirit and an innate kindness that would define the course of her long and beautiful life.

She spent her youth in her hometown, where she attended George Washington High School. Those formative years set the stage for the steadfast values and gentle wisdom that would blossom throughout her adult life. Juanita's guiding hand and empathetic nature made her a treasured confidante, a supportive friend, and a steadfast pillar within her family.

Juanita’s life was filled with love, both given and received. She was the heart of a large and devoted family, and her memory is tenderly preserved in the hearts of those who survive her. Her loving husband of 60 years, Julio DeJesus, remains forever grateful for a lifetime of shared joys and weathered storms, together building a home filled with laughter, devotion, and faith. Juanita’s legacy continues in her children: Diana (Eduardo) Barajas, Julia Padilla, Julio DeJesus Jr., Marlene DeJesus, and her beloved dog, Teddy (her "cosito"), each of whom carries a part of her spirit and wisdom.

Her boundless love encompassed her grandchildren: Justin (Adriana) Salas, Jasmin Salas, Jaylene Smith, Jordan DeJesus, Salvador Padilla, Julian Dominguez, Julia M. DeJesus, and Julissa M. DeJesus. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Jeremiah, Josiah, Zariah, Elijah, Grayson, and Adalyn. Each shared a unique and special bond with their grandmother—she celebrated every achievement, comforted every sorrow, and inspired each one with her stories, laughter, and unconditional affection.

Juanita is also survived by her beloved sisters: Emily Eckhart, Linda (Manuel) Quiroga, Gloria (Efrain) Velazco, Maryellen Melgoza, and Rosemary Ramos, as well as her sister-in-law, Patricia Chavez.

Though her heart was big enough to nurture all those around her, Juanita also held dear memories of those who passed before: her father, Frank Badajoza Sr.; her mother, Maria Chavez; her brothers, Rafael Chavez Jr., Efrain Chavez, and Frank Badajoza Jr.; her granddaughter, Joslyn Smith; her nephew, Manuel "Loni" Quiroga; and her nephew, Jesus Uribe. While the absence of these loved ones was deeply felt, Juanita always honored their memory by keeping their stories alive and their love ever-present in her daily life.

Juanita’s deep ties to East Chicago served as the backdrop for her remarkable journey—a journey marked by gentle resilience, compassion, and an enduring devotion to family. Her home welcomed all, her laughter filled the air, and her wise words offered guidance in times of uncertainty. She was both the steady foundation and the joyful spark, inspiring everyone fortunate enough to have shared her life.

To honor Juanita’s life and legacy, friends and family are welcome to attend a visitation at Acevez Funeral Home Hammond, located at 4404 Cameron Ave, Hammond, IN 46327, on Sunday, August 9, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Final viewing and closing prayers will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the same location from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A burial will follow at St. John and St. Joseph Cemetery, 1547 167th St, Hammond, IN 46320, beginning at 12:30 PM.

Her unwavering love and steadfast faith have woven an indelible legacy—one that will shine through those she leaves behind, today and always.
