Jovita E. Cavazos

Jovita E. Cavazos, affectionately known as Nuna, left this world on May 10, 2025, in Hammond, Indiana, surrounded by the love of her family, specifically her daughter Christina. Born on February 15, 1954, in East Chicago, she was a vibrant soul whose laughter and spirit brightened the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Nuna was not only a wonderful mother but also a proud grandmother and great-grandmother. She passionately celebrated life’s precious moments, creating cherished memories with her grandchildren, whether it was sitting and talking during birthdays or taking delightful trips to breakfast with her daughter and grandkids. She brought people together, always the heart of the gathering, sharing glasses of wine, laughter, and heartfelt conversations. Her joyful presence was felt wherever she went, and her beautiful smile made even the simplest of occasions feel special.

A strong woman and a loving mother, Jovita embodied a spirit of resilience and strength. Her journey through life included proudly earning her GED, furthering her education at St. Joseph College, and dedicating 20 years to work at Good And Plenty. Throughout her life, she embraced her roles with grace, serving as both a devoted mother and a style icon. Jovita had a delightful sense of fashion, often described as a diva with a wonderful sense of style.

Her interests were diverse and enriched her vibrant lifestyle. She relished listening to oldies, baking with her sisters, and sharing quality time with her grandchildren. Court TV and romance movies were among her favorite pastimes, as was enjoying a professionally done hairstyle and nails. Jovita's ability to find joy in the little things made every day an adventure.

Nuna's legacy is lovingly carried on by her daughters, Christina Ledesma and Sonia Hernandez, her sons-in-law, Mike Ledesma and Gilberto Hernandez, as well as her beloved grandchildren Lisette (Pinky), Michael, Alonzo, Emani, Eliani, Jesse, Angelo, and Manuel. She is also a cherished matriarch to her eight great-grandchildren, who will surely remember her warmth and kindness.

Sadly, Jovita is reunited with her beloved husband, Manuel Martinez Jr., and her sons Alonzo G. Cavazos and Manuel Martinez III, as well as her siblings and her parents, Thomasa and Eusebio Gutierrez. Each soul she has reunited with surely awaits her with open arms.
