Listen to Obituary

Jesus "Chuy" Garza, affectionately known as "Tito," a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025, at the age of 92, surrounded by his loving family in East Chicago, IN. Born on June 2, 1933, in General Terán, Nuevo León, México, Chuy's journey began as a young orphan who provided for himself by doing various jobs including shining shoes and making sandwiches to survive.

In pursuit of a brighter future, Jesus moved to the United States, where he would eventually marry his beloved wife of 43 years, Maria Garza Herrera. Their union was a testament to his devoted nature, and together they built a family that would become his greatest pride. Maria sadly preceded Jesus in death. Jesus passed away on what would have been their 61st wedding anniversary. She was in his thoughts until the very end.

Jesus was the loving father of five children, all of whom were born within two years: a pair of twins - Jesus (Tonya) Garza and Jose Garza, followed shortly thereafter by a set of triplets - Maria (Andrew) Moricz, Maria M. Tejeda, and Martha C. (Robert) Flores. He treasured each moment spent in their company, as well as with his thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom were enriched by his love and warmth.

Jesus was a man of passion and ambition, operating his cherished Mexican candy shop, Dulceria Garza, for an impressive 48 years. For many of those years, Jesus managed the business while also working full-time in construction and raising the kids. He could be found at the candy shop making dulce de leche, camote, coco, and other popular delicacies through his 80s. His shop was more than just a business; it was a family cornerstone where they shared their cultural treasure with the community.

Jesus was known for his radiant personality and his loving, kind, and generous spirit. He welcomed everyone with open arms and a warm smile, often taking on the role of a father figure to those around him. Jesus' humor brought joy to those he encountered, and his compassionate nature made a lasting impact on all who knew him. His interests included supporting the Chicago Cubs, watching his favorite shows like "El Gordo y la Flaca," listening to records from his favorite artists like Pedro Infante and Los Alegres de Terán, and savoring his beloved cafecito. Whether singing spontaneously composed songs or playing with his children, he filled every moment with joy.

Jesus' dedication to his family was evident in everything he did, always putting them first. His birthday celebrations became cherished memories that illustrated his zest for life.

He is lovingly remembered by his five children, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and countless friends whose lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey. He will also be reunited in the afterlife with his wife, Maria, his parents, and three siblings, all of whom he missed dearly.
