Helen Golembiewski (née Menzyk), a lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on July 30, 2026, at the remarkable age of 102. Born June 18, 1924, in East Chicago, Indiana, Helen lived a life defined by dedication to family, faith, and community.
Helen enjoyed a distinguished career at Calumet National Bank, where her commitment, integrity, and professionalism earned her respect and recognition. Over the years, she held several positions of increasing responsibility, culminating in being named “Employee of the Year” in 1985—an honor reflecting her exceptional work ethic and steadfast reliability.
Helen's devotion extended beyond her professional achievements into every aspect of her personal life. She was known for her unwavering Catholic faith, which served as the cornerstone of her values. Her home was always filled with warmth and hospitality. Helen’s culinary talents were cherished by all who gathered around her table; her fried chicken was a family favorite, and her cheesecakes became an eagerly anticipated treat at every gathering.
She leaves behind a close-knit family who mourn her passing and celebrate her enduring legacy. Surviving are her son, John Gerrard, and his wife Barbara; her daughter, Pat Cross, and her husband Bill; as well as her grandchildren: John Gerrard, Jeff Gerrard, Jay Gerrard, Elizabeth Cross, and Matthew Gerrard.
Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Golembiewski, her son, Jerry Gerrard, as well as six sisters and a brother.
The family will receive friends for visitation at Acevez Funeral Home Hammond, 4404 Cameron Ave, Hammond, IN 46327 on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Father Eduardo Malagon, will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Casimir Church, 4340 Johnson Avenue, Hammond, IN 46327. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, 801 Michigan City Road, Calumet City, IL 60409, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Helen Golembiewski’s long and fulfilling life leaves an indelible mark on all who knew her. She will be fondly remembered for her faith, her steadfast presence, and her boundless generosity.
A special thanks to the wonderful people at Transitions Hospice in Crown Point, IN. In lieu of flowers donations to them would be greatly appreciated.
