Listen to Obituary

Elaine Lynn Mierwa, a radiant spirit whose love for life and family was as boundless as the sky, left this world on November 4, 2025, just two days shy of her 75th birthday. Born on November 6, 1950, in the vibrant heart of East Chicago, Indiana, Elaine was a beacon of light, known for her quirky humor and infectious smile that could brighten even the darkest of days.

Elaine embarked on her journey through life with grace and determination, graduating from George Rodgers Clark High School in Hammond, Indiana, as part of the illustrious Class of 1969. With a career that began at Standard Oil and later with the University of Chicago Geophysical Sciences Building, Elaine's professional life was but a prelude to the devoted role she embraced as a mother and grandmother. Upon the birth of her beloved daughter, Emily, Elaine dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her family, enveloping them in love, nurturing their dreams, and prioritizing their happiness above all.

She and her loving husband, Anthony Mierwa, celebrated an impressive 50 years of marriage this past September, a testament to a bond that flourished through laughter, challenges, and unwavering support. Elaine's devotion to her family was the proudest of her accomplishments. Her fierce love radiated through the lives of her cherished husband, daughter Emily Mierwa (Brian Mitchell) and grandchildren: Kiana Dominikovich, Ashlynn Brezene, and Kaiden Mierwa-Mitchell, bringing joy and warmth to their hearts. Elaine's legacy of love is further embraced by her devoted sisters, Andrea Susoreny and Anita Mehas, who carry forward the spirit of their shared childhood and memories.

Elaine's love for nature was profound; she found solace and joy in every aspect of the outdoors—from soaking in the sun's gentle rays to coaxing life from the earth through her gardening endeavors. In her younger years, her hands delighted in crafting, as she explored various mediums to express her unique creativity. She was a woman whose ideas were as colorful as her personality, always ready to share a laugh or a heartfelt story.

Her unexpected journey home came with a suddenness that shocked those who loved her, leaving behind echoes of her joyous spirit and vibrant laughter. She is now reunited with her beloved parents, Andrew Szanyi and Rita Szanyi, nee Pietrzak, who surely welcomed her back with open arms.

As we gather the threads of memory, we remember Elaine not only as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother but also as an extraordinary soul who embraced life with a quirky charm and a heart full of love. Though her physical presence has departed, the indelible mark she leaves on the world will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew her. Elaine Lynn Mierwa, you were truly one of a kind—a unique soul whose beauty, humor, and fierce love will forever remain in our memories, lighting the way for us to carry on.
