Dorothy J. Douglas (Ellis), born on April 14, 1949, in East Chicago, Indiana, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, in Dyer, Indiana. Dorothy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend whose presence filled the lives of many with warmth and kindness.
A proud graduate of Morton Senior High School in 1967, Dorothy furthered her education with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. Her career at the University of Chicago marked a significant chapter in her life, where she dedicated herself to her work and made lasting memories.
Dorothy was known for her vibrant personality and her unwavering support for her family, especially her grandchildren. She took great joy in participating in their activities, often attending their high school bowling leagues. As an avid reader and a passionate piano player, she filled her home with music and stories that inspired those around her.
Dorothy cherished traveling and created many beautiful memories with her family, embodying a spirit that thrived in togetherness. Her proudest accomplishments were not defined by milestones but rather by the joy of being surrounded by her loved ones and sharing in their happiness.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Daniel Douglas; her sons, Jeff (Amanda) DeBold and Brian (Debbie) Douglas; her daughter, Nicole DeBold; her sons, Phillip DeBold and Benjamin (Joy) DeBold; her daughter Wendy (Nick Muskin) Douglas; and her special relationship with "sons" Joe and Chris. She also leaves behind her brothers, Edwin Ellis and Warren (Denise) Ellis; her sister, Betty (Dan Kwolek) Ellis; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Dorothy's life will also be remembered by her lifelong friend Gayle (Pierre) Vuletic, who shared countless moments and experiences that enriched both their lives.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Mary Alice (Miller) Ellis, and her daughter, Yvette Douglas.
The celebration of Dorothy's life will be held at Acevez Funeral Home in Hammond, Indiana. Visitation will occur on December 16, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, beginning with a prayer service starting at 4:00 PM and concluding at 4:30 PM. Viewing will continue on December 17, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM. Dorothy will then be laid to rest at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois, during the burial service scheduled for December 17, 2025, at 10:30 AM.
Dorothy J. Douglas will be remembered not only for her accomplishments but for the love and joy she fostered in her relationships. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
